On September 18, 2012, Her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain visited the Centro de Adopción de la Asociación Nacional de Amigos de los Animales (Center for Abandoned Animals Adoption of the Naional Association of Friends of Animals) outside of Madrid.

According to the official website for the center:

“The National Association of Friends of Animals is a non-profit organization that was founded in Madrid, Spain, in 1992, in response to the high number of animals that are neglected and abused in our country…

The animals at our center receive the care they need including food, exercise, love and veterinary care. The ANAA Adoption Center is intended as a place of passage, since the aim is that all animals are adoptable and find a family that will provide the necessary conditions for optimal quality of life. In ANAA Adoption Centre staff work daily so engaged as volunteers who selflessly give their time, in order that the animals are in the best possible conditions.”
