On the evening of January 24, 2012, Her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain was at the Teatro Real in Madrid where she attended the performance of the one act opera, Iolanta, byPyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and the opera, Perséphone, by Igor Stravinsky. Upon her arrival Her Majesty was greeted by the President of the Board of the Teatro Real Foundation, Mr. Gregorio Marañón y Bertrán de Lis, the Director-General of the Teatro Real, Mr. Miguel Muñiz, and the Artistic Director of the Teatro Real, Mr. Gerard Mortier.
On January 25, 2012, His Majesty King Juan Carlos I of Spain welcomed the President of Peru, Mr. Ollanta Humala at Zarzuela Palace in Madrid. Later in the evening His Majesty along with Queen Sofia and the Prince and Princess of Asturias attended a gala dinner at the royal palace in honor of Mr. Humala’s official visit to Spain. On January 25, 2012, Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands along with Their Royal Highnesses Prince Willem-Alexander of Oranje and Princess Maxima of the Netherlands were in Den Haag to attend an extraordinary meeting and farewell ceremony to Mr. Herman Tjeenk Willink, Vice-President (Viceroy) of the Council of State. Also in attendance were Prime Minister Mark Rutte as well as other top government officials.
For his 15 years of service, as Her Majesty’s main government advsior, Mr. Tjeenk Willink received the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau by the Queen.
On January 24, 2012, Their Majesties King Albert II and Queen Paola of Belgium hosted a luncheon for members of the federal government at Château de Laeken. Also in attendance were Their Royal Highnesses Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde, T.I.R.Hs Princess Astrid and Prince Lorenz, and T.R.H.s Princess Claire and Prince Laurent “I look like Peter Griffin from Family Guy” of Belgium. 🙂
Earlier in the day, His Majesty held an audience with the prime minister of Belgium Mr. Elio Di Rupo, again, at Château de Laeken.

On January 24, 2012, The Prince of Wales visited the town of Barnsley in England. Whilst there the heir to the British throne “… toured the Barnsley Chronicle newspaper facility and visited Huddersfield University where he met young people involved in the Prince’s Trust and donors to the charity.”
Afterward, the Prince of Wales met with legendary Cricket umpire, Dickie Bird, whose was raised in Barnsley. During their meeting Mr. Bird stated that he was “humbled” upon meeting the future king of England. The duo also talked about Cricket as well as the health of the Duke of Edinburgh who is reportedly doing “much better”.
On January 24, 2012, Their Majesties King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia of Spain along with Their Royal Highnesses Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia of Asturias participated in a reception to welcome members of the diplomatic corps in Spain held at the royal palace in Madrid. Also in attendance were Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel García-Margallo and many others.
During the reception, held in the Throne Room, His Majesty King Juan Carlos I gave a speech regarding the economic crisis in Europe stating:
…the international economic crisis overcoming demand promote the opening up of economies and trade. To do this Spain is prepared to continue filling up with economic content excellent relations with all the countries you represent. Spain is today a world leader in sectors such as the infrastructures, civil engineering, telecommunications and renewable energy.
With regards to the European Union and the crisis affecting the Euro His Majesty noted:
Spain believes that the solution of the problems that affect the Union only can come from the strengthening of economic governance, fiscal discipline, the coordination of economic policies, structural reforms and the instruments of financial stabilization, we return to the path of economic growth and job creation.
His Majesty also discussed the importance of strengthening ties with Latin America and Asia as well.

On January 24, 2012, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco held an audience with the Mayor of Rome, Mr. Gianni Alemanno at the Palais Princier de Monaco. The sovereign prince and his guest participated in a luncheon meeting whereupon they discussed… oh I don’t know… business I suppose. 🙂
Meanwhile, Dom Duarte Duke of Bragança (Portugal) attended a gala dinner held at the Hotel Bom Jesus de Braga. During the evening the Duke and attendees discussed “… regional and local production as well as trade.”

On January 24, 2012, His Imperial and Royal Highness Prince Georg Friedrich of Prussia celebrated the 300th anniversary of the late King Friedrich II in Potsdam, Germany.
The day began with a wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of King Friedrich II at Sanssouci Palace. Guests at the event included the prince along with Brandenburg Minister-President Matthias Platzeck, the mayor of Potsdam, Jann Jakobs and many others. Afterward there was a reception, concert as well as lecture at the Konzerthaus am Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin.
