On Thursday, June 18, 2015, Their Majesties King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, Their Royal Highnesses Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, and His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent celebrated the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo in Waterloo, Belgium.

(VIDEO) Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium Visits the 2015 EXPO Milano.

On Friday, June 12, 2015, Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium visited the 2015 EXPO Milano, held under the theme Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life, in Milan, Italy.

After attending the National Day of Belgium opening ceremony Her Majesty accompanied by her delegation attended a luncheon held in her honor.  In the evening, Her Majesty attended a gala concert with a performance by Belgian singer, Orzak Henry.

(VIDEOS) Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium Attends the 2015 Prix Francqui.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, June 9, 2015, Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium attended the 2015 Prix Francqui held at the Palais des Académies in Brussels.  The winner of the award went to Professor Stefaan Vaes from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven) for his “…ground-breaking work on the structure and classification of operator algebras.”

According to the Prix Francqui jury, via a press release, Professor Vaes:

“…findings have significantly improved all existing techniques in his field of research. In addition, Stefaan Vaes inspires an entire generation of young mathematicians in Belgium and beyond. The jury also recognised Professor Vaes for his efforts to make the abstract world of mathematics and applications including the search algorithms behind Google more accessible for the general public.”

On Wednesday, June 3, 2015, Their Majesties King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium accompanied by Their Imperial and Royal Highnesses Princess Astrid and Prince Lorenz of Belgium, Archduchess and Archduke of Austria-Este presided over the 2015 Prix International Roi Baudouin pour le Développement en Afrique held at the Palais de Bruxelles.

The award honors outstanding contributions of individuals or organizations in the development field in Africa.  The award also highlights the innovative initiatives which improve quality-of-life and empower local communities to take development into their own hands.

The winner of the 2015 Prix International Roi Baudouin pour le Développement en Afrique went to Mr. Deogratias Niyonkuru, founder of the organization ADISCO Burundi.  The organization received the award for their:

“…work in encouraging entrepreneurship and creating cooperatives and health insurance societies federated at national level, so as to strengthen the financial autonomy of individuals and sustainably change the conditions of living together for the people of Burundi…”

On the morning of May 28, 2015, Their Majesties King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium visited public broadcasting company for the Flemish region, Vlaamse Radio- en Televisieomroeporganisatie (VRT), in Brussels.

Upon their arrival to the television station Their Majesties were warmly welcomed by current VRT CEO, Mr. Leo Hellemans, and VRT’s Chairman of Board, Mr. Luc Van den Brande.

After attending a meeting, whereupon Their Majesties were informed about the on-going challenges facing the public broadcasting network (as all public networks around the world deal with), they were given a tour of the station’s studios including “..where VRT’s television news bulletins are made, the studio used by the VRT’s children’s television network ‘Ketnet’ and the studio used by the consumer affairs program ‘Volt’…” writes VRT via a press release.
