On the evening of Thursday, March 17, 2022, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco gave a televised address announcing his desire to welcome Ukrainian refugees to the Principality of Monaco.
The sovereign prince also noted his “…full solidarity…” with the Ukrainian people, the war in the Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis, the efforts currently being put in place by the Gouvernement Princier de Monaco to help the refugees coming to the Principality, and more.
Here is some of what he had to say (rough translation, sorry):
“…in the name of my family and the Monégasques I want to express, once again, my full solidarity with the Ukrainian population.
We will, therefore, participate in this momentum [to help those fleeing the Ukraine by providing] available resources. We will mobilize to welcome and support the displaced and vulnerable people… I asked my government to put in place a coordination unit dedicated to welcoming and supporting the refugees. The Croix-Rouge Monégasque (Red Cross Monaco) will also bring all its expertise in humanitarian crisis management and I know many other Monegasque civil society entities are also hard at work to support local and international efforts…”
On the afternoon of Thursday, March 17, 2022, Their Majesties King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain hosted a luncheon for the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, and First Lady Mariem Fadel Dah at Palacio de La Zarzuela in Madrid, Spain.
Prior to the luncheon, His Majesty King Felipe VI held a meeting with President Ghazouani along with Mauritanian government officials.
On Thursday, March 17, 2022, Her Majesty Queen Mathilde of Belgium hosted a round-table discussion with youth magistrates at the Palais Royal in Brussels.
The theme of today’s discussion, The COVID Pandemic and the Increased Fragility of Young People focused on the “…impact of the various confinements on the mental well-being of vulnerable young people is discussed…” according to the Belgian royal court.
On Thursday, March 17, 2022, His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg accompanied by the Minister for Immigration and Asylum, Mr. Jean Asselborn, the Mayor of Luxembourg City, Mrs. Lydie Polfer, visited the SHUK Emergency Accommodation Structure and Reception Center in Kirchberg.
The SHUK reception center was established by the Government of Luxembourg to help those fleeing Ukraine due to the war. At this time the reception center holds 250 beds. Pets are also welcomed “…[there is a] special area for them. The Administration of Veterinary Services will regularly visit the emergency accommodation structure to support the regularization of the animals...” according to the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs in Luxembourg.
During today’s visit, His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri met with SHUK officials and toured the center. The Grand Duke also spent time meeting with various Ukrainian refugees who “…shared with him their experiences of war and exile… [he] comforted them by confirming the empathy of all the people of Luxembourg…” notes the Cour Grand-Ducale.
On Thursday, March 17, 2022, His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco accompanied by his two children, Their Serene Highnesses Hereditary Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella of Monaco, attended a recital at the Princess Grace Irish Library in celebration of St. Patricks Day.
Students from the Académie de Musique et de Théâtre Rainier III in Monaco performed traditional Irish music along with contemporary music by Irish composers and musicians.
