On September 22, 2013, Their Imperial Highnesses Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako of Japan visited the city of Kōriyama in the Fukushima Prefecture for the day.
The imperial couple’s first stop was a visit to a “…facility that measures the radiation levels of produce…” according to the Mainichi Daily News. Thereafter, the crown prince and crown princess visited a temporary housing shelter where they met with 80 residents from Futaba who lost everything due to the March 11, 2011, 9.0 earthquake off the Tōhoku coast and the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant meltdown that followed. The day ended with a visit to an indoor playground.

The event, which also takes place in several cities throughout Belgium, encourages people to get out of their cars for a day, and to simply enjoy their city by using other modes of transportation (hence bikes, rollerblades, skateboards, and/or just simply putting one foot in front of the other and walking slowly).
