On November 18, 2011, H.R.H. Princess Mathilde of Belgium visited the Koninklijk Institute Spermalie in Bruges to participate in “A Week of Reading Aloud”. This year’s event focused on the youth enrolled in special education classes. During today’s event the princess read aloud various stories to primary school students as well as visited several classes that helps those with hearing and visual impairments.
His Majesty King Albert II of Belgium underwent surgery this morning to treat Basal cell carcinoma on his nose. According to a palace spokesperson, the operation — which took place at the Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc — was a success and is recovering well. King Albert II was released from the hospital and is currently resting at Château du Belvédère.
On November 17, 2011, H.R.H. Prince Philippe of Belgium attended the 130th anniversary of the newspaper, L’Echo, in Brussels. During the celebration banquet there were discussions regarding economic affairs and so forth. There was also a lecture from Mr. Gerard Mesrallet entitled, Belgium: At the Crossroads in its Economic History and Energy: A Major Issue of Economic Growth. Click here to view photos.

Meanwhile, H.R.H. Princess Astrid attended the 50th anniversary of the Social Space Tele-Service held at the headquarters of the European Social TV service in Brussels. This association aims to help those in need.
On November 17, 2011, H.R.H. Princess Mathilde of Belgium was in Molenbeek-Wersbeek where she visited a community center, De Vaartkapen Caleidoscoop, to participate in the literacy project, “A to Z”. The project includes literacy classes open to anyone with the objective of social integration of single parents of young children who are not in school.
On November 16, 2011, T.R.H.s Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde of Belgium visited the province of Luxembourg. The royal couple’s first stop was the Ferme du Monceau (Monceau Farm) in Vaux-sur-Sure and then they visited the transport company, Charlier. In the afternoon, the prince and princess travelled to the town of Neufchâteau where they attended a reception at the City Hall in their honor. Upon leaving the City Hall hundreds the royal couple mingled with hundreds of locals who where waiting for the royal couple outside.

On November 15, 2011, Queen Fabiola, T.R.H.s Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde, T.R.H.s Princess Astrid and Prince Lorenz, Princess Claire and Prince Laurent (aka Peter Griffin from Family Guy) of Belgium celebrated Fête du Roi (King’s Day) in Brussels, Belgium. The celebrations began with a Te Deum Mass at the beautiful Cathédrale des Saints Michel et Gudule with Archbishop Andre-Joseph Leonard presiding. According to various sources, a dozen student activists from the N-SV (Nationalistische Studentenvereniging) were arrested outside of the Cathédrale des Saints Michel et Gudule by Brussels police. These protestors are not exactly keen on having a royal family… basically they were right-wing anti-monarchists.

After the Te Deum Mass the Belgian royal family visited the Palais de la Nation where they participated in a ceremony held by the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the Federal government on the occasion of Fête du Roi. The day ended a military parade outside the Palais Royal in Brussels.

On November 8, 2011, H.R.H. Princess Mathilde visited the House of Parenting in Péruwelz. In the afternoon, she visited the de Bakermat in Leuven. The House of Parenting encourages a process of co-education among parents of children 0-3 years old and social workers, for the development of the child. A collaboration with Le Galion, a unit of Family Education of Péruwelz CPAS, provides services to disadvantaged families.
