On January 21, 2013, Her Royal Highness Princess Mathlide of Belgium was at the Marriott Hotel in Ghent to participate in the seminar, Transatlantic Forum on Inclusive Early Years: Addressing Disparities in Access for Migrant Children from Low-Income Families.
According the newspaper, Nieuwsblad, Princess Mathilde gave a speech stating “…more attention must be given to poverty issues in pre-primary education training programs for teachers and health workers. ‘Quality early education and care leads to better health and better emotional and intellectual development,’ said the princess. She added that it also can reduce social inequalities and increases the opportunities to get out of the vicious circle of poverty.”
