Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Countess of Wessex celebrated Commonwealth Day 2012 by attending an observance service held at Westminster Abbey on March 12, 2012.
According to the official website for Westminster Abbey:
Commonwealth Day is the annual celebration of the Commonwealth. The centre-piece of the day is a multi-faith service at Westminster Abbey organised by The Royal Commonwealth Society, on behalf of the Council of Commonwealth Societies.
The theme for this year is ‘Connecting Cultures’. Through a mix of world music, dance and personal testimonies, the service will explore the golden threads that tie together people from every continent, faith and ethnicity. source
During today’s service Her Majesty along with her family and hundreds of guests listened to speeches made by Dr. Jane Goodall as well as enjoyed musical performances by several artists including Rufus Wainwright and Hugh Masekela.
