On March 11, 2013, His Royal Highness Prince Felipe of Asturias visited the Academia de Artillería-Polígono de Baterías in Segovia to observe various military exercises designed to protect Spain in case of a chemical and/or nuclear accidents.
Meanwhile in Madrid, Her Royal Highness Princess Letizia of Asturias attended the Premios Discapnet de la Fundación ONCE award ceremony held at the Centro Deportivo y Cultural de la ONCE.

On Saturday, March 9, 2013, His Majesty King Juan Carlos I of Spain was discharged from the La Milagrosa Hospital in Madrid after having an operation for a herniated disc on the lumbosacral area of the spine last Sunday.
According to His Majesty’s surgeon, Dr. Manuel de la Torre Gutiérrez, the old king will continue his rehabilitation, at Palacio de la Zarzuela, for the two to six months, “The first phase will focus on the lower back and later continue with leg exercises…” explains Dr. de la Torre Gutiérrez in a press conference earlier this week.
On the morning of Friday, March 8, 2013, His Royal Highness Prince Felipe of Asturias, accompanied by the Secretary of State for International Cooperation and for Latin America, Mr. Jesús Gracia, arrived at the Simón Bolívar International Airport in Venezuela to attend the funeral of the late President Hugo Chávez.
Upon his arrival the prince was greeted by the Spanish Ambassador to Venezuela, Mr. Antonio Pérez Hernández, the Vice Foreign Minister of Affairs for Venezuela, Mr. Temir Porras, and the Minister of Tourism for Venezuela, Mr. Alejandro Fleming.

On Friday, March 8, 2013, Her Royal Highness Princess Letizia of Asturias presided over the ceremony of the 2013 Día Mundial de las Enfermedades Raras held at the Palacio del Senado in Madrid.
Today’s event was organized by the Federación Española de Enfermedades Raras (FEDER).
On March 7, 2013, Their Royal Highnesses Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia of Asturias attended a concert, In Memoriam, in “…tribute to all the victims of terrorism…” held at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid.
It was announced by the Spanish royal court that His Royal Highness Prince Felipe of Asturias will attend the funeral of President Hugo Chávez in Caracas, Venezuela, on Friday, March 8, 2013. The prince will be accompanied by the Secretary of State for International Cooperation and for Latin America, Mr. Jesús Gracia.
Meanwhile, His Majesty King Juan Carlos I of Spain has sent a message of condolence “…to the Venezuelan people on Wednesday…” according to El Pais. In his statement His Majesty recalled “…Chávez’s ‘determination and dedication’ in helping Venezuela and the rest of Latin America…” Thankfully, the old king didn’t remind the people and the government of Venezuela that he once told the late President Chávez to “Shut Up!” during the 17th Ibero-American Summit in Santiago, Chile back in 2007.
