On Wednesday, November 27, 2013, Her Royal Highness Princess Letizia of Asturias arrived at the Palacio de Congresos y Auditorio de Navarra, Baluarte in Pamplona, Spain, to presides over the inauguration of the XVI Congreso Estatal del Voluntariado.
During this morning’s inauguration the future queen of Spain presented the 2013 Premios Estatales al Voluntariado Social to several individuals and associations.
On November 25, 2013, Her Royal Highness Princess Letizia of Asturias arrived at the Lonja de los Mercaderes in Valencia to preside over the XXV Edition of the Premios Rey Jaime I de Ciencia e Investigación.
The awards are presented to distinguished scientists and researchers in the fields of Basic Research, Economics, Medical Research, Environmental Protection, New Technologies and Entrepreneurship. The winners receive a 100,000 Euros, gold medal, diploma, and are invited to join the High Consultative Council on Research and Development of the Presidency of the Generalitat Valenciana.
The winners of the XXV Edition of the Premios Rey Jaime I de Ciencia e Investigación are Mr. Manel Esteller Badosa (Basic Research), Mr. Francesc Xavier Vives Torrents (Economics), Mr. Jesús F. San Miguel Izquierdo(Medical Research), Mr. Xavier Querol (Environmental Protection), Mr. Antonio González Colas (New Technologies) and Mr. Pedro Espinosa Martínez (Entrepreneurship).
On November 21, 2013, Her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain and His Royal Highness Prince Felipe of Asturias visited His Majesty King Juan Carlos I of Spain at the Hospital Universitario Quirón in Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain, after having a two-hour operation on his left hip.
The king’s surgeons “…removed the temporary prothesis and implanted a permanent one…” according to a spokesman for the Spanish royal court. His Majesty is expected to remain in the hospital for another week.
On November 20, 2013, Her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain visited the Middle School 223, a bilingual school, in the South Bronx, New York City. During the visit Her Majesty met with students, staff, and toured the school.
On November 19, Her Majesty attended the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute Gold Medal Gala held at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. Last evening’s gala, hosted by legendary fashion designer Mr. Oscar de la Renta, honored former United States Secretary of State, Ms. Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Spanish actor, Mr. Antonio Banderas, for “…their contributions to ties between the United States and Spanish-speaking countries…”
On November 19, 2013, Their Royal Highnesses Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia of Asturias arrived at the Moore Building in Miami to view the exhibition, TAPAS: Spanish Design for Food, organized by Acción Cultural Española, Centro Cultural Español Miami, Espana-Florida Foundation, and Spain Arts & Culture.
According to Centro Cultural Español Miami, the exhibition, curated by Ms. Juli Capella:
“…takes a look at how Spanish culture has come up with ingenious inventions and solutions in this respect throughout its history, playing a prominent role at all times…”
Prior to their visit to the exhibition the royal couple toured the “…Coral Way K-8 Center, a school that has offered a unique bilingual program since 1963 with the backing of the Spanish government…” according to the newspaper, Miami Herald.
On the evening of November 18, 2013, Their Royal Highnesses Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia of Asturias arrived at the Freedom Tower in Miami to attend the España-Florida Foundation gala dinner.
Last evening’s event was held to “…celebrate the 500th Anniversary of Ponce de Leon’s first arrival in Florida…” according to the official website for the España-Florida Foundation.
On the evening of Saturday, November 16, 2013, Their Royal Highnesses Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia of Asturias arrived at the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California to view the exhibition, Junípero Serra and the Legacies of the California Missions, curated by University of California, Riverside Associate Professor (Public History) Catherine Gudis and Professor (History) Steve Hackel.
After the viewing the royal couple attended a gala dinner held in their honor with local republican government officials, Huntington Library donors, etc, etc, etc.
Yesterday, the royal couple arrived in Miami, Florida to officially open the 2013 Miami Book Fair. This afternoon, the prince and princess received the Key to the City from Miami-Dade mayor, Carlos Gimenez.
