On Sunday, May 15, 2022, Mr. Pierre Casiraghi — representing HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco — attended the welcoming ceremony of the 1st Edition of the Blue Climate Summit in Papeete, Tahiti. Mr. Casiraghi is the youngest son of HRH Princess Caroline of Hanover, HSH Princess of Monaco and the late Mr. Stefano Casiraghi.

The purpose of the week-long Blue Climate Summit is to accelerate ocean-related solutions to climate change, launch major announcements, galvanize task forces, present impact investment opportunities, and provide an international forum for Pacific Islanders to spearhead action on ocean and climate issues.

The summit will bring together over 200 scientists, environmental activists, business leaders, policymakers, financial experts, community leaders, influencers, and youth leaders to accelerate solutions to some of the greatest challenges facing humankind.

The Blue Climate Summit is an endorsed action of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and is co-hosted with the Government of French Polynesia alongside other public and private institutions.

Though Prince Albert II was unable to attend the Blue Climate Summit he did participate in a live video call with Mr. Casiraghi introducing him. In his message, the sovereign prince noted that “…our determination must continue more than ever [to protect our oceans]…”

During yesterday’s event, the Blue Climate Initiative, which organized the Blue Climate Summit, awarded prizes to six community projects from Tanzania, the Philippines, Palau, Peru, the Bahamas, and Moorea as well as the $1 million Ocean Innovation Prize which was divided between three projects in Indonesia, Guadeloupe, and the United States.
