On Tuesday, June 14, 2022, Their Royal Highness The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended a memorial service for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire disaster.

At 12:54 A.M. on June 14, 2017, a fire broke out at the Grenfell Tower residential building in West London. The fire rapidly engulfed the 24-story concrete structure killing 72 people.

The cause of the fire was an electrical fault in a refrigerator owned by a resident on the fourth floor of the Grenfell Tower. According to the newspaper, New York Times, the “…fire in the kitchen quickly spread to flammable cladding covering the outside of the 24-story building and climbed up the side of the structure.”

During today’s multi-faith memorial service, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge placed a wreath at the foot of the Grenfell Tower in memory of those who tragically passed away.

Today’s memorial service was organized by the Grenfell United an organization that works to provide pastoral care for those affected and advocate for families to ensure that such a tragic event is not repeated.
The organization previously held memorial services outside the Grenfell Tower site in 2018 and 2019 and facilitated individual visits to the site for the bereaved and survivors during the pandemic to lay flowers and take time to pay their respects.
