On Monday, June 6, 2022, Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary along with His Royal Highness Prince Christian of Denmark, Her Royal Highness Princess Isabella of Denmark, His Royal Highness Prince Vincent of Denmark, and Her Royal Highness Princess Josephine of Denmark participated in the 2022 Royal Run.

The Royal Run is organized by the sports vision Move for Life in collaboration between the Danish Sports Confederation, DGI, and the Danish Athletics Association. The Danish television network, TV2, is a media partner of the Royal Run. The TrygFonden, the Nordea Foundation, and the Novo Nordisk Foundation are the strategic partners.

Regardless of ones age and/or fitness level anyone can participate in the Royal Run. The purpose of the Royal Run is to encourage as many people as possible to participate in the “…sports community at their own pace and with their own individual goal…” according to the official website for the Royal Run. The overall aim is to encourage people to be physically active.

This year over 90,000 people registered for the Royal Run which took place in the cities of Aalborg, Aarhus, Kolding, Næstved, Copenhagen/Frederiksberg, and Bornholm.

After completing the five-kilometer route in Næstved, Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary spoke with TV2.dk about her experience in the run, “It was a beautiful trip to get around the harbor and see all the graffiti art. There are so many people here with great enthusiasm all around…”

When asked about the record breaking 90,000 registered participants Crown Princess Mary smiled and said, “It’s absolutely amazing, as I heard my husband say, ‘It’s a dream come true’ to get so many people to lace up their running shoes on their holiday.”

Meanwhile, in Aarhus, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik completed his five kilometer run. The city has had a special place in his heart since the early 90s when he studied political science at Aarhus University.  It is also the city where Crown Prince Frederik got a taste for running. Thirty years ago, he ran his first marathon in Aarhus. Prior to completing his five kilometer run in Aarhus, the heir to the Danish throne also participated in the Aalborg leg of the Royal Run.

In Copenhagen, Their Royal Highness Prince Christian, Princess Josephine, Princess Isabella, and Prince Vincent participated in Royal Run.

According to TV.dk, Prince Christian and Princess Josephine ran the Copenhagen route twice. The royal siblings had already run the one-mile route with Princess Isabella and Prince Vincent. But, they decided they had the stamina to run five miles. Prince Christian completed his run in 22 minutes, “At least I was faster than my father. It was a bold and really beautiful route” said the prince.

After his siblings completed the Royal Run they stayed on the sidelines to cheer on the thousands of runners as they crossed the finish line.

Congrats to all those who participated in the 2022 Royal Run!
