Well, this is a surprise! It seems that His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark carried the Olympic Flame through Notting Hill in London on July 26, 2012. Now, I must admit that I’m confused as to why he carried the flame. Shouldn’t a British man or woman have the honor of carrying the torch/flame not the crown prince of Denmark? Typically, a person carrying the torch/flame is from the country which is hosting the current Olympic Games.
Anyway, after Crown Prince Frederik passed the flame to the next runner he was asked about his historic moment in the Olympic spotlight (a bit dramatic, I know), “… the atmosphere was nice… it was a good experience!!”
Yay.

A few days ago Chinese pianist Lang Lang carried the torch for a leg. Venus Williams, Boris Becker, Michael Johnson and many other non-Englishmen/women have carried the torch recently. Back in ’94, the Games were in Norway, Frederik ran with the torch while it was in Denmark. Torch runners can be from anywhere and have any profession. Frederik’s a member of the IOC, at least there’s a connection there.
Huh, I didn’t know that. It was my understanding that those who have the honor of carrying the torch/flame are citizens of the country which is hosting the Olympic Games (hope that made sense).
Thanks for the clarification, Tyson! I appreciate it very much.
Yeah I’m pretty sure as the torch is carried through countries starting from Greece the torch is carried by citizens of the country its going through i.e. going through Germany, German citizens would carry it. However I have no idea about the routes. From what I’ve read online it seemed to go straight from Greece to the UK instead of through Europe and other continents like in 2008. I don’t get it.
Well he’s on the Olympic committee isn’t he? I assume that’s why.
Probably, but so is HRH Prince Willem-Alexander of Oranje, HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, and a host of other royals (reigning and non-reigning). So why didn’t they carry the torch/flame?
Perhaps it all comes down to one simple thing: He was asked to carry it. He agreed.
Maybe a nod to the House of Glucksburg?
