On January 14, 2011, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark celebrated her 40th anniversary on the Danish throne. The day began with the entire Danish royal family arriving at Roskilde Station in the royal saloon car which was a gift to Her Majesty on her 60th birthday.
Once Her Majesty arrived at Roskilde Domkrike she along with her sisters, Her Majesty Queen Anne-Marie of Greece and Her Royal Highness Princess Benedikte, laid three wreaths at their parents, King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid’s, graves.
Then the Queen along with His Royal Highness Prince Henrik rode in the famous 1840 gold carriage, escorted by the Gardehusarer Regiment, from Amalienborg to the Rådhus (City Hall) to attend a reception. Upon their arrival the royal couple were greeted by Lord Mayor Frank Jensen. Inside the Rådhus, speeches were made and the royal family were entertained by a lovely choir accompanied by musicians. Afterward, the Queen along with Prince Henrik appeared on the balcony at Rådhus to wave to the thousands of well-wishers.
This evening the entire Danish royal family — minus Princess Marie — as well as the Greek and Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg families will attend a gala concert, held at the DR Concert Hall, in honor of Queen Margrethe II’s accession to the throne.
